U.S. Department of Defense Deploys Biometric-Capable Smart Cards
U.S. Department of Defense will utilize 600,000 smart cards as part of the Common Access Card program, to be rolled out at 900 sites.
The smart cards will be used for personnel identification, electronic signatures, e-commerce, and secure building and system access, and will eventually support more than four million cardholders.
The product, SafeWord PremierAccess from Secure Computing Corporation, also supports Secure Computing's own hardware and software tokens, passwords, digital certificates, biometrics, USB tokens, wireless devices, and a variety of PKCS no. 11-based smart cards.
The Virtual Smart Card Server from Secure Computing enables users to securely access public key-based applications from any device. PremierAccess also supports digital certificates from major authorities, like the industry standard X.509 v3, and can also generate its own certificates.
