Biometric Services International, LLC (BSI) Releases Latest Summary of
Published and Emerging Biometric Standards
Morgantown, West Virginia -Biometric Services International (BSI), a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Biometric Security Project, today announced the availability of its latest review of biometric standards activity, “Summary of Published and Emerging Biometrics Standards.” Progress in biometrics standardization since the last report, issued in June 2007, has been significant with twelve new standards published bringing the total number of published standards to sixty-four (64). The report details these, along with an additional 70 emerging standards currently under consideration.
Numerous application areas will see improvement in functionality because of the newly published biometric standards. Face Recognition Standard amendments add support for 3D range images and specify how to take photographs for optimal face recognition performance. New standards addressing biometric fusion (integration of multiple biometrics) support BioAPI biometric fusion initiatives while a new Technical Report on
biometric fusion identifies potential standards requirements in this area. An overview of biometric systems and biometric profiles defines the overall architecture of a biometric system and appropriate terms.
In discussing the report, Valerie Evanoff, CEO of BSI stated that as the biometrics industry is characterized by ever larger deployments such as U.S.Visit,Registered Traveler and the FBI’s Next Generation Identification (NGI)program “...comprehensive standards are critical to ensure the interoperability, scalability and reliability of these systems. To support fully functional programs manufacturers need to build a robust portfolio of commercial off the shelf (COTS) products and government off the shelf (GOTS) products that conform to published standards. BSI conformance testing programs determine if a particular biometric product meets any applicable ANSI INCITS and ISO/IEC standards. A product that passes these tests will have met the key criteria that insure it will function in an open standards environment. Products that fail such tests will not be reliable components of systems that are designed and built around standards-compliant application programming interfaces (APIs) and software development kits. (SDKs)”.
