Brunei launches biometric passport
Bruneians will soon be able to take advantage of new biometric passports following a year of development.
The $7.1 million ePassport project, run by the Immigration and National Registration Department, replaces the country’s existing machine readable passport, which was introduced in 1993.
The ePassport is compliant with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards, Local reports suggest the ePassport is embedded with a 72 kilobyte chip and contains data on facial and fingerprint images.
The country may also be participating in ICAO’s Public Key Directory initiative.
The project was a joint undertaking between domestic supplier Information Technology Protective Security Service and German company Giesecke & Devrient – the existing supplier of Brunei’s passports.
