Growing Demand for Biometric Security Systems Results in UK's First Degree Course

International terrorist attacks and the growing theft of personal identities have accelerated the work being done to integrate biometric technologies into security and surveillance systems, particularly in face/finger print recognition. Such is the demand that companies are having difficulties recruiting staff with the appropriate skills.

In response to this demand the Robert Gordon University has launched an MSc Intelligent Biometric Security Systems, the first course of its type in the UK, which aims to bridge the gap between supply and demand of skilled personnel in the biometrics and security industry.

Biometrics are automated ways of recognising a person based on a physiological or behavioural characteristic, such as fingerprints, speech, face, retina, iris, DNA and forensic analysis.

Dr Ann Reddipogu of RGU's School of Engineering said, "Identifying humans using biometrics is particularly attractive to businesses involved in security. Whereas physical items such as security cards, keys and passwords can be lost or stolen, the biometric identifier is unique to each individual."

Graduates from the course are expected to be in high demand with many sectors of industry looking for staff with skills in intelligent systems, biometrics, video communications, computer network security and forensic analysis. These include law enforcement, military, government, financial services, gaming and hospitality, health care, telecommunications, industrial manufacturing, retail and transport.

Dr Ann Reddipogu said, "Students will analyse current problems in security and surveillance systems, and develop and implement novel methods to solve these issues."

In addition to their studies students will have the opportunity to gain industrial experience by working with biometrics companies during their MSc project stage.
