Fourth Government Follows United States, Canada, and Italy in Selecting Drexler Technology's LaserCard with Multi-Biometric ID Capability

Aug-13-03

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.- Drexler Technology Corporation (Nasdaq: DRXR), announced today that a fourth national government has selected Drexler Technology's optical memory cards for secure personal identification. The first three were the United States government, which began using Drexler's secure ID cards in 1997 (INS Green Cards) and 1998 (Department of State Laser Visas), followed by the government of Canada in 2002 (Permanent Resident Cards), and the government of Italy in 2003 (national ID cards).

Initial orders for the new card program have been received, through a value-added reseller, totaling approximately $372,000 primarily for LaserCard read/write drives and training, for the purpose of installing the infrastructure for card issuing. Follow-on orders for optical memory cards are anticipated. The read/write drives along with an initial quantity of optical memory cards are scheduled for shipment this calendar year.

The Drexler-made LaserCard(R) optical memory cards are expected to be used as ID cards for designated citizens of the undisclosed Eastern Hemisphere country. The customer has estimated that a maximum of 7 million persons may be eligible for issuance of optical cards under this program.

The card issuing system will allow the decentralized issuance of optical memory cards in dozens of cities through the use of an Internet-based card personalization application. Citizens' demographics including full color photographs can be collected and encoded on the LaserCard using optical card read/write drives at each issuing station. The system also allows for the future use of multiple biometrics, so that fingerprints and other biometrics can be collected and recorded on the cards, if desired. This is the first installation of a Web-based, secure optical card application for a citizen ID card.

Based in Mountain View, Drexler Technology Corporation (www.drexlertechnology.com) manufactures LaserCard(R) optical memory cards and chip-ready optical memory cards. Drexler's wholly owned subsidiary, LaserCard Systems Corporation (www.lasercard.com), manufactures optical card read/write drives; develops optical card system software; and markets optical memory cards, card-related data systems, and peripherals. In the fiscal year ended March 31, 2003, Drexler sold 7.3 million LaserCard optical memory cards.

LaserCard is a federally registered trademark of Drexler Technology Corporation.
