Serving Those Who Serve: Gateway to Supply U.S. Defense Logistics Agency With Computers for Hundreds of Sites Worldwide

Exclusive Blanket Agreement Helps Agency Leverage Buying Power, Create Common Computing Environment and Save Taxpayer Dollars

Since World War II, the U.S. Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) has provided supplies, logistics and support for the U.S. military and other government agencies. Now DLA is turning to Gateway, Inc. (NYSE: GTW) to supply its own staff with the personal-computing technology it needs to accomplish its mission.

Under a competitively awarded, blanket purchase agreement (BPA), Gateway will provide DLA with award-winning Gateway(R) desktops and notebooks for more than 500 DLA sites worldwide. The agency provides and maintains more than 31,000 PCs for its staff, upgrading its notebooks and desktops on three- and four-year cycles, respectively.

A support agency for the entire U.S. Department of Defense, DLA chose Gateway over other technology providers based on the company's customer support, technology asset management services and ability to serve DLA sites outside the continental United States. In addition, by leveraging its group buying power under the agreement, DLA will be able to cut costs and save taxpayer dollars.

"We wanted to consolidate our PC technology buying into a single BPA, creating one source for all notebooks and desktops. This helps us reduce costs by leveraging DLA buying power, while increasing standardization across the agency," said Bruce Paton, U.S. Defense Logistics Agency's Enterprise Licensing Division. "Gateway ultimately came out on top because the company was able to offer the best value to DLA."

For its desktop needs, DLA will migrate to Gateway's E-Series desktops — offering Intel Pentium 4 processors with built-in Hyper Threading technology that allow users to multi-task without compromising performance. For laptops, the agency will procure Gateway's Centrino-enabled, thin-and-light 200 notebooks, 450 mid-range notebooks and ultra-powerful 600 desktop replacement notebooks. In all cases, DLA will receive hands-on technical support, as well as Gateway's Web-based Asset Management service that allows IT managers to track multiple systems in real time.

Gateway's government team has achieved significant momentum in recent weeks, securing customer wins with Tinker Air Force Base, Georgia State Parole and Pardons, and others. By offering government-focused solutions such as mobile server offerings, biometrics bundles, grid computing and all-in-one, space-saving PCs, Gateway is transforming itself from a traditional PC maker to a branded integrator of technology solutions. As a branded integrator, Gateway will launch an array of branded products across a host of new categories for the balance of the year, and will integrate those products into customized solutions for its consumer and business customers.
