Iridian Announces UAE Border Control System Exceeds One Million Transactions; Thousands of Fake Travel Documents Uncovered in 2003

Jan-07-04

ABU DHABI, UAE and MOORESTOWN, N.J. -Iridian Technologies Inc. and the General Directorate of Abu Dhabi Police announced today that the iris-based National Expellees Tracking and Border Control System has processed over one million travelers to-date. The system was implemented to deter illegal immigrants from entering the United Arab Emirates (UAE) via air, land and sea ports of entry. To-date, the system has caught over 4,300 illegal or expelled immigrants carrying false travel documents.
"To prevent illegal immigration, the iris-based National Expellees Tracking and Border Control System supports the UAE's border inspectors and police in the decision-making process concerning the admissibility of particular travelers. This extremely accurate biometric is critical as they cannot solely rely on travel documents such as passports, visas and work permits due to counterfeiting and the fraudulent use of those documents", commented Lt. Col. Ahmed Al Raisi, Director of Information Technology Department, General Directorate of Abu Dhabi Police.

"The system has been successfully deployed in the United Arab Emirates and is currently being piloted in other countries in the Gulf region", added Imad Malhas, Chief Executive Officer of IrisGuard Inc, Iridian Technologies' partner in the Middle East. "With the focus on travel documents and identity management, the demand for this type of solution has increased dramatically."

The project, which was initiated in August 2001, involves the enrollment of inmates and expellees' irises from geographically distributed deportation centers throughout the UAE into a central database at the General Directorate of Abu Dhabi Police. A real-time, one-to-all iris check of arriving passengers with new visit or work visas at any UAE border point quickly reveals if that person has been previously expelled from the country. People are being enrolled from seventeen enrollment centers covering the whole of the United Arab Emirates while simultaneous searches are taking place from border points, all without any interruptions or delays.

"We are very pleased with the accuracy and speed of the system as it expands", commented Frank Fitzsimmons, President and CEO of Iridian Technologies Inc. "The system is handling over 6,000 searches per day, stopping dozens of previously expelled persons from re-entering the country. Its unique ability to quickly and accurately identify a high number of people in real-time against large databases is unmatched by any other solution today. Iris recognition is uniquely suited to this large-scale identity management task and the Expellee System has proven that. Iridian Technologies wishes to thank our valued customer, the UAE Police, for their commitment and vision."
