Atmel and Veridicom Partner to Deliver Advanced Identity Authentication for PC Users

May-02-05

SEATTLE and SAN JOSE, Calif., Veridicom International Inc., a leading provider of identity management solutions, (BULLETIN BOARD: VRDI) and Atmel(R) Corporation , a global leader in the development and fabrication of advanced semiconductor solutions, announced today that Veridicom has chosen an Atmel processor for inclusion in its portable biometric identity product line.

Increased incidents of identity fraud are driving ever more sophisticated embedded security solutions. For example, recent cases involving the theft of credit card, financial, and other personal information from laptops and databases could have been reduced through the use of data encryption and strong authentication. The integration of Atmel's processor into Veridicom's product provides built-in access to locked storage and file encryption with fingerprint sensor matching technology, without the need to install drivers or software on PCs.

Veridicom's VKI-V, (pronounced Vicky Vee), is a portable USB-attached device for PCs that secures corporate and personal information. Data files, financial information, medical records, passwords, and other sensitive information can be securely stored on the device without the need to install drivers or other software on computers. Additionally, with the complimentary VPAS software suite, VKI-V supports multiple applications such as PC and network login, file encryption, email signing, and multi-factor authentication. The device will also support the secure storage of personal information to enable integration with corporate and consumer applications such as loyalty programs, secure distribution of digital entertainment files, access to web services, and other applications requiring greater convenience and security.

"Veridicom's products are well focused on strong authentication and data security by embedding biometrics and processing capability in multi-use devices," said Tim Morin, Director of Business Development for the ASIC/ASSP Business Unit, Atmel Corporation. "As a leading innovator of microcontrollers and secure IC's, this is another clear example of how we're helping technology address the dual challenges of data security and identity fraud."

The Atmel embedded microcontroller was chosen for its combination of processing speed, power consumption and overall architectural fit with Veridicom's unique requirements.

"The performance, security and flexibility of Atmel's processors are an ideal foundation for supporting both the current feature set of VKI, as well as the roadmap we have for the device going forward," stated Paul Mann, President & CEO of Veridicom International Inc. "Our global customers are increasingly demanding stronger authentication and identity management capabilities within a single, intelligent device such as VKI."
