BNX Announces Support for the Next Generation Common Access Card (CAC) and Commitment to Compliance with FIPS 201

May-24-05

VIENNA, Va., — BNX Systems(TM), a leading provider of
enterprise Identity and Access Management solutions, today announced its
support for the next generation GSC-IS 2.1 compliant, CAC program and a
commitment to support the FIPS 201 standard.
CAC serves as standard identification for Department of Defense (DoD)
active duty military personnel, selected reserve personnel, civilian employees
and contractor personnel. It is the principal card used to authenticate users
for logical access to DoD computer networks and systems and is also used to
enable physical access to DoD facilities. CACs store a variety of computer-
readable data, ranging from name, rank and Social Security number to blood
type and benefits eligibility. Over 5.4 million CACs have been issued to DoD
employees, military personal, and civilian contractors since July 2004.
FIPS 201 is a standard released by the National Institute of Standards and
Technology (NIST) to satisfy the Personal Identity Verification (PIV)
requirements of the U.S. Government's Homeland Security Presidential Directive
12 (HSPD-12), a directive from President Bush mandating a common
identification standard for all federal government agency employees and
contractors. The standard defines varying levels of authentication assurance
for both physical and logical access based on the authentication technology
used (smartcard PIN, Biometric, and/or PKI). According to the standard, such
access control is handled by Identification & Authentication (I&A) products
such as those offered by BNX.
BNX enables centralized management of authentication policies using CAC
and other authentication technologies, including biometrics. The use of CAC
can be combined with fingerprint authentication, for example, to increase the
level of security to sensitive network systems and applications. In addition,
CAC can be used with BNX's Enterprise SSO product to streamline access to
applications and to eliminate the use of passwords.
"BNX is committed to supporting the President's Homeland Security
Directives as well as the FIPS 201 standard for a federal identity
verification system," said Mike Harper, CEO of BNX Systems. "Our BNX
Authenticated Sign-On(TM) solution is meeting the current needs of the DoD and
other federal customers. BNX provides agencies with improved security, rapid
access to enterprise applications, as well as compliance to mandated
standards."
