Jevic Transportation Announces `Next Generation' Professional Driver ID (PDI(TM)) System - Jevic Security Web(TM) Technology Instantly Verifies Professional Drivers

May-04-03

DELANCO, N.J., Jevic Transportation today announced a revolutionary new driver identification system that allows shippers and receivers to instantly verify the identity of their professional driver. The system was unveiled at the American Chemistry Council's 2003 Responsible Care(R) Conference: Above and Beyond, in Miami on May 4-7, 2003. This "instant identification" system using web technology, the first of its kind in the motor carrier industry, significantly enhances Jevic's security initiatives.

At the center of the new system is a redesigned driver identification badge combining a picture of the driver, his driver identification number and a barcode. When a driver arrives at a location, the customer either scans the barcode or types in the driver's identification number while at the secure section of the Jevic website. Once the information is submitted, a picture of the driver will appear on screen. This allows customers to compare the driver to the ID badge picture and the picture on file at Jevic. This eliminates the potential for counterfeiting of ID badges, as well as assuring the safety of customers, drivers and their shipments.

"We developed this new system with the safety and security of the entire supply chain in mind," said Paul Karvois, president and CEO of Jevic Transportation. "By allowing the end user to instantly verify the identification of our driver, they are assured that the person is a trained, uniformed, Jevic professional."

Jevic also plans to combine this new driver identification system with its current satellite cargo-tracking software, further enhancing the Jevic Security Web. This means that when a customer tracks their shipment at the Jevic website, a photo of the driver delivering the shipment will be displayed along with the tracking information so the customer will know who to expect, while at the same time receiving detailed information about the location of the shipment thanks to pinpoint satellite accuracy.

"What makes this new PDI badge system `next generation' is the combination of a plastic laminate badge containing a digitally scanned photo and barcode, with our web-based technology that allows the recipient to verify the identity of their Jevic driver by simply scanning a barcode," said Karvois. "Using the Jevic Security Web not only prohibits duplication, it also allows for instant verification of our driver right at the security gate by either scanning the barcode or entering the driver number from the PDI."

In this time of heightened security, motor carriers have to look at ways to ensure the safe transport of all types of cargo — from the mundane variety to hazardous materials.

"The threat of terrorism against our nation's infrastructure is a very real one," Karvois said. "At Jevic we're setting the standard when it comes to security in the motor carrier industry by giving our customers another level of protection."

This new driver identification system is the latest step Jevic has taken in its efforts to improve the security of its customers' cargo and its equipment on the road while adding value at the same time.

Jevic uses a Breakbulk-Free operating model that provides low incidences of claims by creating a better delivery system. Additionally, this system eliminates the need to load and unload cargo numerous times en route. With GPS satellite equipment on all vehicles, Jevic is able to provide "real" real time supply chain information via phone or web.

"At Jevic, we don't just move shipments from one location to another," said Karvois. "We offer secure, best-in-class supply chain solutions to our customers."
