Jun-15-09 Interview with Ken Lehman, Vice President of Identity Management, Northrop Grumman

Ken Lehman NorthropI reference the recent release of NG-ABIS, which provides the Biometrics Task Force to run at a higher “lights out” level of operations. "Lights out" means that through the use of multi-modality and fusion we are able to run at a higher rate of automated identification of an individual that wouldn’t require the need for human intervention to do a biometric examination. With the new system you have a much faster turn around time and greater scale capability to provide results. I’m not aware of any other system in the world today that has this capability in production that is supporting and enabling the warfighter. You will see systems like ABIS next providing this type of capabilities in the federal/civil, state and local, and commercial markets. Northrop Grumman with our partners are…

May-19-09 Interview with Imad Malhas, CEO, IrisGuard Inc.

Imad Malhas IrisGuard iBank Suite - Our technology can ensure that remote terminals are secure by positively identifying the customer at the point-of-transaction without a Pin of Card whether they are standing before a Teller, an ATM, logging onto a website to undertake a transaction, or attempting to gain physical access to a sensitive internal system or vault. This goal has now been successfully achieved and banks are now banking on IrisGuard.

What’s missing is an “EYE” Point of Sale and we will re-invent the 21st century POS device… we have also plans for such a solution and we hope to release it sometime in over the next twelve months.

Apr-30-09 Interview with R.J. Langley, Vice President, Major Systems, Daon

R.J. Langley, DaonFirst, identity is at the core of cyber security. Thus, the security of the authentication process is a major factor in the overall security of any system. Multi-factor authentication increases the security level of this process. You may steal an identity card, but you must know the password. If we add a third, biometric factor to this process it becomes very, very difficult for a token to be misused, even if the owner is coerced into divulging the password.

I think the use of a biometric becomes much less of an issue when that biometric is seen as reducing the potential for fraudulent use of a person’s identity, or it protects other, potentially more sensitive personal information, such as a medical history.

Mar-19-09 Interview with Tarvinder Sembhi, VP Sales, Identity Market, WCC Smart Search & Match

Tarvinder Sembhi Identity MarketHSPD-24 recommends a layered approach for inclusion of biometric technologies in the screening process for Known and Suspected Terrorists (KST). While fusion of biometric, biographic, and contextual data is expected to lead to more accurate identification, it requires a system-wide approach including;
1) High-speed rules-based search in very large data sets,
2) Synchronization of identifying data siloed in disparate federal databases, and
3) Fast and reliable screening using multiple matching algorithms.
Sophisticated matching software - such as ELISE ID - is well-suited to…

Mar-16-09 Interview with John Mears, Director of Biometric Solutions, Lockheed Martin

John Mears, Lockheed Martin Biometrics It was also recognition of our business model in the sense that we have tried to be independent and objective and have surveyed the breadth of biometrics. I know that for example on findBIOMETRICS, one of the things that you do is that you show all the different people that are participating in the industry. That’s one of the things that Lockheed Martin does as well. For a given customer mission, we assess the mission, determine the requirements and then try and find the best components and partners to pull together and satisfy our customers’ needs. So it’s very much along the lines of what findBIOMETRICS is trying to do, which is to foster diversity and advancement in the industry. We’re trying to match up industry partners with customer missions in a way that benefits both. That recognition was a part of the Frost & Sullivan Award and it is…

Mar-01-09 Interview with Manfred Boeswald, President and CEO, MB fingerMetrica

Manfred Boeswald MB fingerMetricaIn a lot of cases we work with customers who want to integrate fingerprint technology into their existing product and solution concept. We see fingerprint as add-on functionality where it is an additional feature where cards, pins, passwords, keys or passports are currently being used and are superseded or combined. We supply algorithm and hardware know-how, manufacturing expertise, training support and mechanical design in knowledge, because all of these skills are very important to migrate fingerprint into a broad range of devices and equipment and to create modern new lifestyle ergonomic products.

Feb-01-09 Interview with Phil Tusa, Vice President, Biometrics Programs, AOptix Technologies Inc.

Phil Tusa AOptix Iris RecognitionWe began our work in iris biometrics with a design of a prototype to image the iris for biometrics at very long distances, believing that Adaptive Optics would be the key enabling technology for long stand off distance iris imaging. Our first prototype system was very successful at imaging to 10 meters initially and then ultimately to 18 meters with pristine image quality.

We migrated to a strategy of developing a commercial iris recognition product that operates at a nominal 2 meter standoff distance, which we felt would be the ideal distance for a wide range of cooperative identification and authentication applications.

Dec-01-08 Interview with John Petze, CEO, Privaris Corporation

John Petze PrivarisIf I want to get in the computer room I present the card at a standard RFID reader. Now let’s say that I need to increase my security to respond to regulatory changes and I need biometric verification at that door now. Previously my only option would be to tear out the RFID reader and put a biometric reader on the wall. This can be very disruptive and costly. With our approach, biometric processing is on a personal handheld device and upon a match it then outputs standard RFID signals.

But how are we going to get there? Are we truly going to see a world where there is a unique fingerprint sensor on every door, every window, every gate, every PDA, every cell phone and every automobile? Is that really the way it’s going to go?

Nov-30-08 Interview with John Cassise, CEO, Innometriks Inc.

John Cassise InnometriksThe Lumidigm sensor gives us a lot of flexibility in addressing difficult applications, especially those with a rugged environment requirement because the unit can mount directly outdoors. Lumidigm has the first fingerprint sensor technology that will just work no matter what you’re dealing with. Whether it’s outside, whether it’s damaged fingers, whether it’s a wide range of users, we’ve had tremendous success in being able to just walk in and set the product on the table and say, "give us the worst case scenario."

Nov-15-08 Interview with Torsten Nordentoft, Technical Director, CardLab ApS.

Torssten Nordentoft CardlabThere are many airports that use magnetic card for security. If you get hold of the card, you have access to the security areas, but by adding the biometric functionality to the card, you link the card to the owner. That means that instantly, without having to change anything at the Airport, you can use the card immediately. You just need to replace the card and enroll the owner’s fingerprint to it.

The other major market is the financial card market. Today fraud is mostly done by copying cards, also called skimming, and this card will stop that, but the major increase in fraud will happen with internet trading and online banking. This card will allow you to have a very secure transaction without being able to be hacked.

Oct-30-08 Interview with Bill Bartlett, Manager of US Government and Civil Programs, Identifications Solutions Division, NEC Corporation of America

Bill Bartlett NECWe see situations in which a Systems Integrator has an opportunity that requires both PIDplus and our AFIS solution, NEC’s Integra-ID. As long as it doesn't conflict with our law enforcement projects, this package with both PIDplus and Integra-ID is available to integrators who have, for example, large scale latent matching requirements and require front-end work stations and user interfaces.
