Scandinavian Airlines wins technology award for biometric solution - July 15, 2008
Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) was awarded the ”Leadership in Technology Award” by Airline Business for theiruse of Precise Biometrics’ check-in solution with fingerprint recognition and boarding, as well as their contribution to ”green approaches”.
Precise Biometrics supplies to the fingerprint recognition solution, Precise BioFlight™, which is based on a temporary database of passenger fingerprints tied to the passenger record and completely erased after the flight. The use of the fingerprint removes the need for boarding passes and manual ID-checks.
Peter Söderlund, Vice President, Product Concepts at SAS says that they are happy about the reward as a recognition of their work.
”Webeganusing biometric scanning of passengers' fingerprints at checking-in in response to intensified security requirements. The objective was to find a way to securely connect passengers with tickets and baggage. ID-card control was too complicated in practical terms, since the number of passengers is significant. A fully automatic solution was the solution and the biometry has functioned quite well", says Peter Söderlund.
SAS’ passenger studies show that 98% of the passengers that use the system finds the process of using their fingerprint to be simple, quick and convenient.
”This is the best proof that Precise Biometrics’fingerprint solutions add efficiency in travel applications. It certainlyincreases the passenger experience and saves the airline time, and thereby money, by making the throughput at the airport as smooth and rapid as possible.”says Steen Munch Schmidt, Solution Sales Director at Precise Biometrics
The biometric solution from Precise Biometrics is in widelyused at SAS’ domestic flights in Sweden, Norway and Denmark and includes millions of passengers on an annual basis. It is thereby the world’s largest installation of its kind.
